Outdoor throw pillows are likely to be attacked by mold as well as mildew due to the fact that most of the time they are left outside regardless of the weather condition. For example if it rains, the outdoor throw pillows are likely to get damp thus becoming a perfect place for mildew to breed. In case your outdoor throw pillows are small in size, you can simply clean them using a washing machine with an addition of bleach to ensure that the mildew is removed. However, if your outdoor throw pillows are large enough, it will be necessary for you to clean them using your hands. This is how to go about it:

Ensure that you have all the necessary things to facilitate the cleaning process. These include: sponge, laundry detergent, water, lemon juice, bucket and a laundry detergent as well.

Make some preparations by ensuring that you have taken all the covers from your pillows and wash them separately.

The next step to put some water in the bucket and mix it with soap. To acquire an even mixture, stir it thoroughly using your hand in order to make it sudsy.

Scrub the pillows one by one using the sponge as hard as you can until you are assured that the stains caused by mold and mildew are long gone. The aim of the laundry detergent is to kill the mildew and mold and at the same time ensuring that the stains are broken down completely.

In case there are any stains remaining on your pillows, use the lemon juice to remove them. Cleaning the pillows does not mean that all the stains will be driven away, there might be some pale stains remaining on the pillows which you can remove using the lemon juice. Lemon juice works well as it saturates the stains thus removing them permanently thus making your pillows have a new look.

Rinse your pillows in clean cold water. Avoid using hot water as this can cause some damages to your pillows making them to wear out quickly. Gently squeeze then to remove any excess water. By doing this, the feathers on your pillows will have a stronger smell than before. However, this will eventually fade away as soon as they dry up.

Once you are sure that the pillows are well cleaned and have the perfect appearance that you anticipated for, you can dry them in the sun. The good thing about drying the pillows under direct sunlight is to make the remaining stains to be lifted up through the help of the lemon juice. Here the light from the sun will be acting as a catalyst.

To sum it up, it is necessary to wash your outdoor throw pillows once in a year. Washing them on daily basis may shorten their lifespan. However, for the pillow covers, you should wash them weekly in order to remove the extra dirt on them as they are used outdoor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W30p4KiHX7w

If you’ve been thinking about redesigning a room in your home but don’t know where to begin, we have just the idea for you. You can add design elements to your room by decorating with throw pillows. Adding throw pillows to a room in your home can change it’s entire dynamics by adding splashes of color, bits of texture, and more depth to a room that may otherwise look barren or dull. When decorating with throw pillows, focus on these design elements: pillow number & placement, shape and size, and fabric.

Pillow Number & Placement

When deciding on the number of pillows to use, try using an odd number of pillows. Because the human eye is trained to easily view pairs, an odd number of pillows will instantly catch the eye. If you want to stick with a more traditional style, an even number of pillows opposite of each other will suffice. Placing a few larger pillows is more visually appealing than a clutter of smaller pillows. Larger pillows are better attention grabbers than cluttered small pillows. Size has a lot to do with where you place your pillows as well. If you have a pillow that’s large, try displaying it with smaller pillows, or if you have several sizes, put a medium and small pillow across from a large pillow to balance it out.

Shape & Size

Using unconventional pillow shapes is a great idea when you’re decorating with throw pillows. Oblong shapes add edginess to your design, since they are not commonly used. You can also mix square and circle pillows to add visual aesthetics.

If you’re using square pillows, the size of each pillow should range between 18 to 24 inches. This size is large enough to readily view any pattern that the pillow may have. Smaller square pillows can be used as well, but not with large patterns. They should be a singular color, or with a pattern that is small so it’s visible and doesn’t overwhelm the pillow.

Fabrics

A great way to bring different elements into your room is through the fabric of your pillows. The fabric allows you to infuse different patterns, textures, and colors. If the main purpose of your throw pillows is to add color to your room, try to match the colors of the pillow with a color from other furnishings, decor, or art work in the room. Layering the fabrics of your pillows will also change the dynamics of your room. Don’t be afraid of mixing patterns, though. Tastefully mismatched patterns can make a room come alive if properly done. A good rule of thumb is to keep the patterns all in the same general style, though. For example, if you’re decorating in a modern style, try using all modern prints. If you’re decorating in a vintage style, use prints that are all vintage. Try mixing the different elements of texture, color, and pattern together for a room that is aesthetically exciting.

When you’re decorating your home there are several design ideas that you can draw inspiration from. Remember, sometimes the smallest design elements can have the biggest impact.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhZnHhbcN-Q

You may have noticed that trendy throw pillow covers do not come cheap when you go to buy them at home style outlets (they are much cheaper online!). Try making your own pillows at home, suited to your taste, instead of trying to look for them outside. All you would require is learning the fundamental rules of sewing and then you shall have the pillows that agree with your home decor. Read on to learn how.

Take the pillow which needs a new cover and remove the earlier cover. If that is the cover which is actually holding the stuffing or the contents, then leave it as it is. If the pillow is a ready-made one, just remove the plastic wrapper.Spread the material meant for the throw pillow cover on a flat surface. The wrong side of the material should be facing you when you do this. Now, fold the material symmetrically at the center so that the right sides are together in perfect alignment.

Keep the designated pillow carefully over the folded material, making sure that sufficient material is visible under the sides of the folded material. The visible material will be used to cover the sides of the pillow placed above. You can assess the adequacy of the material by straightening the visible material along the sides of the pillow. Ensure that you have one inch more than the required thickness which would be required for stitching. Now, you have to cut the material carefully, keeping all these points in mind that is, the length, width, thickness and the additional one inch of material required on all sides for stitching.

Among the four sides of pillow cover material, select one side to place the zipper. You may start by opening the zipper and placing it neatly along the side of the material. Employ straight sewing pins to fix the zipper to the material. Ensure that both sides of the zipper have fixed in the same direction of the material. You may verify this by trying to zip and unzip once and also see if the right sides of the material are together when you do this. The zipper pull too should be sliding along the right side of the material.

Now, we shall concentrate on the sewing aspect. Select a strong thread which matches your material and thread your sewing machine with it. Run the machine over the straight pins [mentioned in (iv) above] along the entire length of zipper material neatly, so that the zipper is able to perform well. Keep the zipper open until the entire pillow is sewed on all sides.

Finish sewing the remaining three sides of the pillow material. Once you have sewn two sides, just try sliding the pillow into the material to ensure if the size is apt. To ensure a neat finish, you may appropriately adjust sewing the last side so that the finished cover appears well-fit and snug.

You shall need to clip the inner corners of the now fully sewn pillow cover which gives a neat finish to the finished product, instead of sharp and protruding corners. Now, bring the right side out and see if the stitches look neat and symmetrical. Slide the pillow inside the newly stitched cover and pull the zipper softly. Aren’t you proud of your new home-made cover that shall adorn your chair? Repeat the process with other covers too.
